Reddit recently announced that their API will now require payment for use. This move threatens to eliminate almost all third-party Reddit clients and free aps that relied on Reddit content and sparked protests from projects that depend on the API.
Over 7,000 subreddits with a combined total of more than 2.5 billion subscribers have “disconnected” for at least two days in protest against the introduction of paid API access.
Despite being around since 2005 and known for its diverse and open community, Reddit is still considered unprofitable and mainly earns money from advertising.

By making their API paid, Reddit will finally be able to charge AI services for each request for up-to-date data.
