New EU law requires replaceable batteries on smartphones
A sweeping new law passed by the European Parliament will force all gadgets, including smartphones, to have easily replaceable batteries.
By 2027, phones in the EU will need to have batteries you can replace with no tools and no adhesives. This could fundamentally change how smartphones are designed.
Remember the good old days when you could easily swap out your smartphone battery? Those days are long gone, but the EU may have just brought them back.
The law goes into effect in early 2027 and will have a significant impact on smartphone design, as OEMs from Apple to Google to Samsung will need to come up with new ways to keep the parts connected without adhesives.
This change is mostly an attempt to cut down on environmental waste, and this EU-specific law will likely have ripples across the world, just like the EU law forcing Apple to bring USB-C to all iPhones.
