Amazon and Microsoft join Google in nuclear energy investments

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has committed to a $500 million investment into small modular reactors (SMRs) to help fulfill its clean energy goals.

AWS has entered agreements with Dominion Energy and Energy Northwest to study how these reactors could support their target of net-zero carbon emissions by 2040.

Small modular reactors are advanced nuclear technologies that are smaller but capable of generating significant low-carbon power.

These reactors can be constructed more quickly and installed closer to power grids, making them ideal for AWS’s growing network of data centers.

Microsoft is making similar moves, with plans to restart a reactor at the Three Mile Island plant in Pennsylvania to power its data centers.

The 1979 incident at Three Mile Island was the largest nuclear accident in the U.S.
