Google resolved the bug in a couple of hours, but the crashes have continued for several hours due to caching. Some apps saw crash numbers over 5,000 times higher than normal. App crashes aren’t new, but they usually happen with new software versions, new smartphones, or app updates.

They are also usually fairly limited in scope. Google’s Firebase SDK reportedly experienced an issue a few hours ago that was catastrophic enough to crash thousands of iOS apps and send unsuspecting developers into a frenzy. Bad news if you’re still holding on to Google Assistant on your phone. Google has started killing Assistant on phones in favor of Gemini.

Users have noticed that the option to switch to Assistant is no longer available in the Gemini app. This comes almost two months after Google issued a timeline for phasing out Assistant.

Google started emailing users last month to warn them that it was killing off Google Assistant on phones in favor of Gemini. The company noted at the time that this process would start on September 4 and continue for a few weeks.

Now, it looks like plenty of users are starting to lose Assistant on their Android phones. They’re no longer seeing the “Switch to Google Assistant” option in the Gemini app’s account menu.
