Android's new sideloading guardrails are now official in four countries

Google announced a new process of sideloading apps on Android back in spring this year, and Android users had mixed feelings about it, to say the least. Google argues that the new rules prevent scammers from pressuring people into installing malicious apps, and four countries are now getting the changes. Every phone running Android 7 or later in Brazil, Thailand, Singapore and Indonesia now requires users to enable the option in Developer Options, authenticate, restart the device and wait 24 hours before being able to sideload unregistered apps.

The setting lets users sideload apps from unregistered developers and app stores for seven days or indefinitely, depending on what the user chooses. The authorized app stores for now are, of course, Google Play, Samsung Galaxy Store, Honor App Market, Oppo App Market, Xiaomi GetApps, vivo V-Appstore and Transsion Palm Store. The new sideload flow is deliberately inconvenient to disrupt scammers, but Android users are not convinced, and they believe it may be the first step toward a more closed, iOS-style ecosystem.

From Advanced Flow to ADB and Shizuku, power users can continue installing unverified APKs on Android. Googleโ€™s new Android sideloading rules are coming โ€” and here are all the ways to bypass them.

How to bypass Google’s new Android sideloading rules. Mobile Googleโ€™s new Android sideloading rules are coming โ€” and here are all the ways to bypass them From Advanced Flow to ADB and Shizuku, power users can continue installing unverified APKs on Android.

Users can bypass restrictions via Googleโ€™s multi-step โ€œAdvanced Flowโ€ (which requires toggling Developer Options, restarting, waiting 24 hours, and a few more taps), ADB, Shizuku, rooting, or by using custom ROMs (like Lineage OS and GrapheneOS). Apps installed before the policy rollout will continue to work, though updating them requires completing one of the bypass routes.

Turning off Developer Options after Advanced Flow setup will not revert permissions. Update, October 2, 2026 (02:00 AM ET): It has been brought to our attention that Google has slightly tweaked the timeline mentioned in its blog post on the matter.

Originally, unregistered apps could be sideloaded via ADB or Advanced Flow starting September 30, 2026. Googleโ€™s Developer Verification site has newer details: September 30, 2026: Protections begin for all users who install apps from participating stores in Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand on certified devices running Android 7+.

For now, only the aforementioned four countries are seeing the new sideload process being introduced, but other markets will start seeing the changes soon enough.
