NASA’s Perseverance Mars rover breaks historic record after traveling 28 miles

NASA’s Perseverance rover has set a historic record by traveling 28.10 miles across Mars, farther than any vehicle has ever driven on another world. Armed with groundbreaking autonomous navigation technology and increasingly advanced driving capabilities, the rover is pushing the boundaries of robotic exploration. NASA’s Perseverance Mars rover breaks historic record after traveling 28 miles.

The image was acquired with its Left Navigation Camera on Oct. 11, 2026 (Sol 2006) at a local mean solar time of 14:40:39. 11, 2026), the rover’s total driving distance reached 45.22 kilometers (28.10 miles), establishing a new record for travel on another celestial body.

The achievement was even recognized by Guinness World Records, which presented a commemorative plaque to Perseverance’s engineering twin on Earth. The rover had actually come close to breaking the record about two months earlier. On Sol 1947, Perseverance was just 200 meters short of the milestone, a distance it could have covered in a single trip using its Autonomous Navigation (AutoNav) system.
