Association between sleep quality and self-care in patients with heart failure: a cross‑sectional study

Association between sleep quality and self-care in patients with heart failure: a cross‑sectional study. Download PDF Abstract Sleep quality is a critical but understudied factor in heart failure (HF) self‑care. This cross‑sectional study investigated the association between sleep quality and self‑care behaviours in 309 patients with chronic heart failure hospitalized in cardiology wards at Imam Khomeini Hospital, Ardabil, Iran, in 2025.

Data were collected using the Hippocratic Heart Failure Self-Care Scale (HHFSCS) and the Sleep Quality Scale for Coronary Care Patients (SQ-CC). Poor sleep quality was significantly associated with lower self-care scores ( r = − 0.51, p < 0.001). Hierarchical regression showed that adding sleep quality explained an additional 10.1% of variance in self-care (ΔR² = 0.101, p < 0.001) beyond demographic and clinical factors (overall R² = 0.521).

Sleep quality is significantly associated with self-care in heart failure patients. Although the cross-sectional design limits causal inference, these findings suggest that sleep quality may be a modifiable factor worth considering in future interventions designed to improve self-care.
