What features do you lose if you use Apple AirPods with a Samsung Galaxy phone?

AirPods work with any Bluetooth device, but they lose almost all of Apple’s fancy features. What features do you lose if you use Apple AirPods with a Samsung Galaxy phone. AirPods pair with Android like any other Bluetooth device, but most of their smarts stay behind on the iPhone.

Do the same next to a Samsung Galaxy, and you’ll get nothing. Instead, you’ll need to double-tap the front of the case on AirPods 4, AirPods 5 or AirPods Pro 3 (or hold the button on the back of older models) until the light flashes white, then connect them manually through Bluetooth settings. But smooth connectivity isn’t the only feature you lose when using your AirPods outside the Apple ecosystem.

Apple warns that "you can’t use Siri, but you can listen and talk," but that’s underselling it. Automatic device switching, ear detection, Spatial Audio head tracking, the Ear Tip Fit Test, Live Translation, hearing health tools and the heart rate sensor on AirPods Pro 3 all depend on an iPhone, iPad or Mac. Some apps can claw back a few of these features, but at $249, AirPods Pro 3 cost the same as Samsung’s Galaxy Buds 4 Pro.

Bloomberg ‘s Mark Gurman today reported that Apple is facing a growing problem where some people will buy iPhones or other products and either remove accessories from the box, open up the device and remove components, and/or remove the entire device, and then attempt to return the box hoping that the employee will not notice. When a customer seeks to return an iPhone, he said that Apple’s retail employees have ordinarily been instructed to open the box and verify the contents, but Apple has since come up with a solution that will cut down on wasted inventory.

In his Power On newsletter today, Gurman said Apple has started providing retail employees with a device that can "scan an in-box iPhone and run diagnostics on it to make sure the phone is fully intact, leaving the box sealed and able to be put back into inventory." Apple began rolling out this device to stores earlier this month, he said.
